 About Art Class

Picture

First through Fourth Grade, and Full-Day Kindergarten students have art for an hour once per week. A.M. and P.M. Kindergarten have art once a week for a half hour. While there are smocks in the Art Room, please note when your child has art below, so they don't wear their best on that day!

Mondays: AM-K, KP

Tuesdays: 1B, 2B, 3AM, 4E

Wednesdays: 1T, 3B, 4M

Thursdays: 1G, 2J, 3K, 4G

Fridays: 1M, 2C, PM-K, 3CM, 4H

What Students Will Accomplish:

Students learn about the Elements of Art and Principles of Design through a Discipline-Based Art Education Program. Specifically, students study art history through participating in projects and discussions about different cultures, artists, and their works. Students will also learn to talk about art through mini-critiques, consider the meaning and appeal of art (aesthetics), and will explore various art materials and processes. Cherokee's art program emphasizes risk-taking, problem-solving, and creative processing through an interdisciplinary and multicultural approach. With that said, I try to make art class a very exciting and interesting place to be, so that by the time the kids leave Cherokee School, they have developed a life-long appreciation for art. My goal is to ensure that every student feels comfortable creating and sharing, and to know that as long as they try, everything they produce is fantastic, valuable, and helps them to grow creatively as an individual and an artist.

Grades:

First through fourth grade students receive grades in art on their report cards. Grades are determined through a Performance Rating Rubric and an Effort grade:
Picture
4 = Performance shows strength
3 = Performance is acceptable
2 = Performance is improving
1 = Performance needs improving

Effort:
+ Excellent
= Satisfactory
- Needs Improvement

Typically, there is not an issue with grades in art, due to the fact that most students are interested, applying what they learn, and try their best. If there is an issue, I will notify parents so we can work together to figure out the needs of the student.
